As the tension heightens and the drama increases, unimaginable plot twists emerge, new characters appear and alliances form. Here are some of my favorites:
Nate Arresting His Dad
I've been waiting a long time for Nate to finally stand up to his parents and he didn't disappoint There have been times when I have questioned Nate's moral compass (I mean his best friend is Chuck Bass not to mention he's into a different girl every week) but after Nate turns his dad in to the FBI, I think that marks a change in Nate from an immature party boy to a responsible young man. Not to mention I was glad his father got what he deserved (it was really frustrating to watch him flee the country in Season 1)
This cute little storyline just showed us how perfect Chuck and Blair really are for each other- also how there is no one out there even close to Blair or Chuck.
Bart Dying
There are certain rules for death when it happens on TV shows. It has to be someone whose death will strongly impact other characters but it can't be a character the audience was too attached to or a character that is central to the plot. Bart Bass fullfills all of these requirements. He has served his purpose, now it's time to see how the Upper East Side will react when it is rocked by death. For Chuck and Lily especially Bart's death changes everything and is central to the plotlines of the next several episodes. If a character does die on the show, the show needs to make the most out of it, not just minimize it to one episode. And that's what Gossip Girl did.
Lily and Rufus's Love Child
This was probably my favorite storyline of Seasons 2 and 3. When Rufus said to Lily "Just tell me. Was it a boy or girl?" I thought at first that the baby had died. But when I found out that the baby was out there, it created endless possibilities. It also permanently connected them, cementing for the viewer the belief that they were meant to be together.
Jack Bass
Chuck has one messed up family tree. Why not add an evil uncle to the mix who is trying to take Bass Industries? Oh and who also sleeps with Blair. Let's not forget about that. Watching Chuck pitted against someone as devious and even more heartless than himself was not only entertaining but compelling to watch. Also I see family resemblance.
Chuck Resisting
Blair's "Playing the Wife"
Things can never go smoothly for Chuck and Blair. At least not until the end of the show. That would make the relationship less interesting for the viewer and we could never have that. Also it makes sense for Chuck to rebuff Blair's efforts to look after him in her time of grief. It would be uncharacteristic of Chuck not to act out when he is in pain.
The Adoptive Parents Lying About Their Son
Nothing on Gossip Girl is ever simple and rarely honest. I knew when the adopted father told Lily and Rufus that their son was dead that, he had to be alive because they would not have invented some an elaborate storyline otherwise. And lies only create more obstacles. And obstacles only lead to more drama. Which is what Gossip Girl is all about.
Chuck and Lily Alliance

The "Age of Innocence" Play
As I have oft stated in my Glee reviews, performing a play or a musical on a TV show is a perfect way to develop further drama and relationships. Watching the Upper East Side prepare to perform "The Age of Innocence" when they are anything but was entertaining and amusing. The actual performance is full of surprises but is definitely one play I wish I had front row seats for.
Blair's Rebellious Phase
I'm not surprised Blair reacted so strongly to her rejection from Yale (and almost every other prominent college) Basically all of Blair's hopes and plans have been crushed with one decision that she makes during high school. I was really angry at how everything worked out for Blair so I fully supported her letting out steam even if it was with Carter. Blair is always the one in control (except for that fateful night at Vitrola) so it's interesting to see what it's like when she lets loose (minimum damage esepcially compared to Serena)
Nate Comforting
Blair
I feel Blair really needed someone to be there for her and Nate was just the right guy. Nate's changed a lot since they dated in Season One- he is less selfish and focused more on the longterm rather than the short term. The growing up he's done makes him a good temporary partner for Blair (I say temporary because only Chuck is right for Blair and everyone knows it) Some say a Nate-Blair reunion was unnecessary but I think it's understandable that Blair would revert back to something familiar at a time when her life is so uncertain. Besides he's better than Marcus any day.
