Season 2 had a lot of hype to live up to. All things considered I'd say it did rather well. Here I'm gonna take a closer look at some of it's shortcomings.
Emma's OCD
Episode: Alot of them
First
off let me say that I have OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). I was formally
diagnosed with it at age 11 but began showing symptoms long before that. So to
me Emma's quirks and odd behavior are not just comic relief but a sign of
severe mental illness. I don't mind that they gave one of the characters OCD. I
think more awareness needs to be made about how common it is and how difficult
it can be to live with. But I will say that I wish they had developed Emma's
OCD a bit more. They show her polishing grapes and they show her keeping every
part of her lunch in separate containers but so what? I wish we could see Emma
continually getting some real help rather than showing up and running away from
therapy. Plus her symptoms are so stereotypical. Yeah germs and neatness are a
big part of OCD but other symptoms include:
- Repeatedly checking in on loved ones to make sure they’re safe.
- Counting, tapping, repeating certain words, or doing other senseless things to reduce anxiety.
- Fear of causing harm to yourself or others.
- Intrusive sexually explicit or violent thoughts and images.
- Excessive focus on religious or moral ideas.
- Fear of losing or not having things you might need.
- Accumulating “junk” such as old newspapers or empty food containers.
Personally
I think any of those would make for a better plotline than polishing fruit.
Is
there suddenly a shortage of able bodied males at the school? Why do we send a
bunch of girls who (with the exception
of Lauren) don't even play sports? Plus it's unrealistic. If Sue isn't
allowed to shoot people out of cannons, I doubt there isn't at least one rule
preventing four girls jumping in the game in a desperate last minute
substitution when the most exercise they have gotten in the last week is vocal
warm-ups.
Sam's Justin Bieber Boy Band
Episode: Comeback
Stupid. How desperate are you to play the Bieber card?
Sue/ Grinch Plotline
Episode: A Very Glee Christmas
The whole "Grinch" thing was way
over the top. We know Sue hates the Glee club and she hates happiness. We don't
need her to have a green face to see that. Sue needs to get a hobby and Becky
needs to get therapy. And compared to
some of the other stuff she has done, stealing presents seems pretty lame. Sue
needs a hobby and Becky needs therapy. Or vice versa.
Sue Marrying Herself
Episode: Furt
Pointless.
I don't know what the purpose of this was. Were we supposed to be amused? Or
feel sorry for Sue? Well both failed. I was just flat out annoyed/ bored as I
am with a lot of the hijinks Sue pulls. And it really is difficult to take her
seriously as an antagonist if she is always engaging in strange whims or ideas.
Emma Marrying Carl
This
was so unnecessary. Why couldn't they just date without getting married? Especially since they only
mention that they are married every fifth episode (usually the reader has
forgotten by then) Glee is starting to treat the institute of marriage as a
joke when a couple only stays married for nine freakin episodes!
Britney Makes Brittany Feel Bad About Herself
Episode: Britney/ Brittany
I'm
beginning to think everyone in Glee club has some sort of inferiority complex.
Yes Brittany you can never compare to the successful pop star because she knows
the days of the week. Also no one will
feel any sympathy for the bubbly blonde harlot who has slept with every guy
(and arguably girl) in the school.
Sam Telling Quinn to Kiss Finn At the Kissing Booth
Episode: Silly Love Songs
Well that was stupid!
Waiting is Not A "Viable Option"
Episode: Sexy
One
of my favorite things about Season 1 is that Emma and Rachel decided to wait
until they were ready before they had sex. So when Holly Holiday (who I like as
a character despite the stupid name) says that "waiting isn't really a
viable option" it kind of pisses me off. Sex education is all well and
good but just because you are abstinent doesn't mean you are naïve. In fact
those who are abstinent know that it is the only way to protect yourself 100%
from STDS, and pregnancy. I also didn't like how they made Emma (the
spokesperson for abstinence) look really stupid in this episode. Abstinence is
a decision that stems from morals not mental illness. Leave your comments so I know your not a zombie! I love feedback be it positive or negative but constructive. Either way I hoped you enjoyed this post and please check in again for my next one.
